NSW: Bushfires expected to cause havoc today
Thousands of firefighters and evacuees across New South Wales are likely to have their
Christmas Day disrupted by bushfires, with hot and windy conditions expected.
Conditions similar to yesterday have put authorities on highest alert across eight
districts today, to avert spot fires from being carried over containment lines.
More than 50 bushfires burning out of control yesterday were contained overnight by
up to 2,000 firefighters.
New South Wales Rural Fire Service spokesman JOHN WINTER says conditions will be assessed
at first light to determine backburning strategies and to coordinate the 30 aircraft dispatched
in yesterday's battle.
Around 1,000 campers and members of the local Aboriginal community were evacuated from
the Arakoon State Recreation Area near Kempsey.
Residents in the Blue Mountains, Cessnock and Gulgong in the state's central west were
put on stand-by to evacuate.
The NPWS office has urged campers and bushwalkers to check on park closures with around
15 major fires burning in national parks.
